Do you enjoy patio season, but worry about what it may be doing to your waistline? Here are some easy tips for making the most out of summer patios while keeping your health and nutrition goals in check:
1. Choose a white wine spritzer (your favourite wine mixed with soda) over sangria, which can have added juices and sugars.
2. Quench your thirst with water. Before ordering your favourite beverage, ask for water first. Not only is water the best hydrator, you’ll be more likely to sip on your next beverage, instead of gulping it down.
3. Ask for your beverage ‘virgin’ (no alcohol) or ‘skinny’ (no simple syrup) to save on calories.
4. Don’t show up hungry and nibble mindfully. Typical patio food – nachos, chicken fingers, fries – can have upwards of 2500 kcal! Eat a healthy meal before hitting the patio and, if you do indulge, be sure to share and be mindful of how much you are eating.
